Great TEAM training today at Brentwood Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Special thanks to Professor Cliff Fonseca for bringing out our brothers and sisters from Jiu Jitsu Nation and Hunter Harris for driving the 12+ hours to join us with a fantastic contingent from Team Palhares BJJ at Oklahoma State University. You guys ROCK! The mats were full and the jiu jitsu was flowing. January's Team training date will be announced soon.

2010 Nashville BJJ Open/BJJ Grand Prix - Update
I knew I missed somebody who medalled at the Nashville BJJ Open. Big shout out and congratulations to Mike Gower who took Silver in the white belt 40 and over division. Mike is currently out recovering from surgery - make sure you show him some love when he is back on the mats.
So that means Brentwood BJJ brought home 8 medals plus the team trophy - great job guys!!!

2010 Nashville BJJ Open/BJJ Grand Prix
We are VERY PROUD of our competition team. Brentwood BJJ brought home 4 Gold, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze (and I probably missed somebody). Congratulations to Jordan, Brad, Austin and Mike - Golds, Keith and Nick - Silvers, and Austin again for his Bronze in No-Gi. Team Luiz Palhares also won the 1st place team trophy. Way to go!
Even our guys who didn't place fought exceptionally well. We have several up and coming white belts that are going to be beasts.
The tournament itself was a great success! We want to give a shout out to everybody who made it happen: The table workers, the refs, the runners, the "mat crew," and the great competitors.

There were over 100 competitors - a great turnout for a first event! We are already planning the next one so stay tuned.
We also want to give a huge thank you to our sponsors. Make sure you show them some love. Fighters Market gave $20 gift vouchers to the 1st place finishers in each bracket. Casca Grossa was there with a huge table of goodies and provided a lot of technical support. We also had help from the National Guard, Subway, Budo Videos, and Stanford Fine Art.

Power Kouchi Gari
After our seminar with Lucas Lepri this weekend, Jeremy spent some extra time going over one of Lucas' favorite takedowns. For lack of a better name I'm calling this the "power kouchi gari." We drilled this technique in our Takedowns class tonight.
It differs from the traditional Judo version in a couple of ways. Instead of the traditional setup of getting your opponent to step forward and then "picking" the ankle (requiring perfect timing for the kozushi),
you give a pull on the lapel, step back with the lapel grip leg, change level, and "pick" his lapel grip side ankle with your other foot. Then you drive forward and power through chest to chest. Your non lapel grip hand drops to the outside of his hip thigh.
As he falls step wide with your lapel grip leg and secure a strong half guard top position.
You can see this takedown in action at 12 seconds in, again at 15 seconds in, and no-gi versions with an arm drag at 37 and 40 seconds in.

Brentwood BJJ Pan Ams results 04/10/2010
Matt won his first two matches by submission and then lost on an advantage in the third match. Andrew wrecked his first opponent with a kimura and was beaten by and armbar in his next match. Stan by his patented armbar in the first match but lost his second. Max dislocated his opponent's elbow - but he wouldn't tap and lost on points. Some wins, some losses - but a good showing against the best competition in the world!
